Pump and Inspect Your Septic System Regularly
Your tank should by pumped out approximately every two to three years, depending on the size of your household and the size of your system. This will improve the efficiency of your septic system by removing sludge buildup and other items that don’t break down over time. You should also have your system inspected at least once a year to make sure that it is functioning properly and all components are in good, working order.

Do Not Put Anything Over Your Septic System
Driveways, patios, or decks should not be built on to top of septic systems. The added weight could break the tank lid or damage pipes. It will also lead to compacting the soil, which will reduce its drainage capacity. Keep trees and larger plantings clear of the drainfield area. Their root systems will grow, and could lead to blocked or damaged piping.

Only Flush Bodily Waste or Toilet Paper
Anything else should be disposed of in the trash. Your septic system cannot process the additional items, and they will either get stuck in a pipe, causing a blockage, or collect in the tank until your next pumping. The following items are known to have caused failures in on-site septic systems:

Inert Materials: Plastics, Rubber, Scouring Pads, Dental Floss, Cigarette Filters, Bandages, Hair, Mop Strings, Cloth and Towels do not degrade in an on-site septic system. Inert materials will build up solids, and lead to system malfunction, clogging or increased pump out frequency.

Paper Products: Disposable diapers, Paper Towels, Baby Wipes, Facial Tissues, Moist Toilet paper are not designed to dissolve in an on-site septic system. Excessive Amounts of toilet tissue will not decompose. All can lead to system malfunction, back-up or increased pump out frequency.

Food Wastes: Do not put Animal Fats & Bones, Grease, Coffee Grounds, Citrus & Mellon Rinds, Corn Cobs, Egg Shells, down the sink. Garbage disposals use should be limited to waste that cannot be scooped out and thrown in the trash. Spoiled Dairy Products and Yeasts from home Brewery or baking may cause excessive growth of microbes that do not degrade sewage.

Medicines: Do not flush Baby Wipes, Lotion, Scented or Quilted Toilet tissue, Female Sanitary Products, Cotton Balls or swabs, or expired Medicines/Antibiotics. Septic Tank additives generally do more harm than good. Automatic Disinfection Tablets (blue, clear or otherwise) will kill the organisms needed to consume waste.

Chemicals & Toxins: Kill the microbes necessary FOR TREATMENT. Paint, Paint Thinner, Solvents, Volatile Substances, Drain Cleaners, Automatic Transmission Fluids, Fuels, Pesticides, Herbicides, Fertilizers, Metals, Disinfectants, Sanitizers,

Bleach, Mop Water, Excessive use of Household chemicals and Backwash Water Softener regeneration.

Laundry Practices: On-site systems must process the water as it enters the systems. Laundry should be spread out over the week, not all at one time. Excessive use of detergents, especially those containing bleach, can affect the system performance. Liquid detergents are recommended over powders. Fabric softener sheets are recommended over liquid softeners. Bleach should be used sparingly and at half the rate indicated on the container.

Clear Water Waste: From A/C Discharge lines, Floor Drains, Gutters, whole house water treatment systems, and/or sump pumps can increase the flow to your treatment systems. These flows can at least disrupt, if no destroy your treatment process.
